Last night, the local indie band
Eight Track Mind covered Neil Young's "Revolution Blues" at the Velvet Lounge in Washington, D.C.
There's an interesting little backstory here. For readers of our companion blog Thrasher's Wheat, we recently collided with the band over the
Neil Young versus Bob Dylan kerfuffle. The controversy led to the band inviting Thrasher to their next gig, where they promised to play their searing cover of Neil's
"Revolution Blues". In return, the band's beers were on Thrasher.
Thrasher, Thrashette and Mark, web-jay at
Mansion On The Hill, had a rockin' good time kickin out the jams at U St's Velvet Lounge around the corner from Washington's legendary
9:30 Club. Other bands performing last night were Red Light Return and Guv.
8TM performed a setlist (see below) of "guitar-driven music that keeps the spirit of the rock's past alive while carefully integrating modern influences" originals from their debut album
The Art of Making Noise.
At the set's conclusion, lead singer-guitarist Steve Rubin asked the packed club: "Who here likes Bob Dylan?" Scattered applause. "Who here likes Neil Young?" Wildly enthusiastic cheers.
"OK, this next one goes out to Thrasher!" and the band launched into a scorching "Revolution Blues" with the lyrics changed:
"Well, I hear that Dupont Circle is full of famous stars,
But I hate them worse than lepers and
I'll kill them in their cars."
So it just goes to prove, that reason #11
why Neil Young is Better Than Bob Dylan: Young's "Revolution Blues" is to Dylan's "Masters of War" what
Apocalypse Now is to
Wag the Dog.
