Eight Track Mind's "Passion" in rotation on Mansion On The Hill Radio

mansion-on-the-hill-logo.jpg

One of my favorite internet radio stations -- Mansion On The Hill, is playing in rotation one of our new favorite bands Eight Track Mind.

Last we caught up with Eight Track Mind, covered "Revolution Blues" at the Velvet Lounge in Washington, D.C..

Web-jay Mark on Mansion On The Hill says that the version of "Passion" off the Eight Track Mind album is much more of a slow burn compared to the concert, but great nonetheless.

Check'em out.

Eight Track Mind Covers "Revolution Blues": Velvet Lounge, Washington, D.C.

8-track-mind-velvet-lounge-01-21-06.gif

Last night, the local indie band Eight Track Mind covered Neil Young's "Revolution Blues" at the Velvet Lounge in Washington, D.C.

There's an interesting little backstory here. For readers of our companion blog Thrasher's Wheat, we recently collided with the band over the Neil Young versus Bob Dylan kerfuffle. The controversy led to the band inviting Thrasher to their next gig, where they promised to play their searing cover of Neil's "Revolution Blues". In return, the band's beers were on Thrasher.

Thrasher, Thrashette and Mark, web-jay at Mansion On The Hill, had a rockin' good time kickin out the jams at U St's Velvet Lounge around the corner from Washington's legendary 9:30 Club. Other bands performing last night were Red Light Return and Guv.

8TM performed a setlist (see below) of "guitar-driven music that keeps the spirit of the rock's past alive while carefully integrating modern influences" originals from their debut album The Art of Making Noise.

At the set's conclusion, lead singer-guitarist Steve Rubin asked the packed club: "Who here likes Bob Dylan?" Scattered applause. "Who here likes Neil Young?" Wildly enthusiastic cheers.

"OK, this next one goes out to Thrasher!" and the band launched into a scorching "Revolution Blues" with the lyrics changed:
"Well, I hear that Dupont Circle is full of famous stars,
But I hate them worse than lepers and
I'll kill them in their cars."

So it just goes to prove, that reason #11 why Neil Young is Better Than Bob Dylan: Young's "Revolution Blues" is to Dylan's "Masters of War" what Apocalypse Now is to Wag the Dog.

Ok, before sending the hate mail our way, please see Master & Disciple: Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

Alejandro Escovedo MP3's

alejandro-escovedo.jpg

Over on An Aquarium Drunkard some MP3's by Alejandro Escovedo.

Downloads include "Castanets" and "Sex Beat".

We recently caught Alejandro at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia and the show was most awesome. It might be hard to imagine getting stoked over a string quartet, but they just jammed and rocked.

We met Alejandro and the band after the show and had our CD autographed. He was in good spirits and seemed nearly fully recuperated from his recent illness.

Merle Haggard's 'Chicago Wind' and Neil Young's 'Prarie Wind' - Podcast Review on Americana Roots

merle-haggard-chicago-wind.jpg prairie-wind-cover

The winds blow -- Chicago to the prairie.

From Americana Roots, Ray Randall's Random Review. Ray podcast reviews the new CD from Merle Haggard called 'Chicago Wind' and also reviews Neil Young's new album entitled 'Prarie Wind'.

Ray Randall likes Neil Young's music but finds the lyrics of 'Prairie Wind' tell a "less than cohesive" story.

Get to know your Blogger - Chromewaves

chromewaves-logo.jpg
It may come as no surprise, but one of Thrasher's favorite music blogs is Chromewaves.

In an interview series on Muzzle of Bees called "Get to know your blogger", you can read why. Frank at Chromewaves, nails it:
Muzzle of Bees: When I started listening to music, there were certain musicians that led me in the path of a lot of other bands. Did you have any similar experiences with bands growing up?

Chromewaves: You can probably play six degrees of Neil Young with pretty much everything in my collection. All roads lead to Neil.

More on why all music roads lead to Neil Young.

Los Angeles Times' 2005 #1 Song: Neil Young's "When God Made Me"

neil-young-2005-graham-barclay.jpg
The Los Angeles Times music critic Robert Hilburn lists his Top 10 songs of 2005:
10. Bright Eyes' "When the President Talks to God" (Team Love).
9. 50 Cent's "Just a Lil Bit" (Interscope/Aftermath/Shady).
8. Fiona Apple's "Waltz (Better Than Fine)" (Epic/Clean Slate).
7. Gretchen Wilson's "I Don't Feel Like Loving You Today" (Epic).
6. Franz Ferdinand's "Do You Want To?" (Domino/Epic).
5. Mary Gauthier's "Mercy Now" (Lost Highway).
4. Bruce Springsteen's "Devils & Dust" (Columbia).
3. The White Stripes' "I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)" (Third Man/V2).
2. Kanye West's "Gold Digger" (Roc-A-Fella).
1. Neil Young's "When God Made Me" (Reprise). The tune, from Young's recent "Prairie Wind" album, has such a warm, traditional feeling that it seemed like something from a family hymnal when Young introduced it at a Live 8 benefit last summer. Yet it was equally tender and touching when Young repeated it during a telethon for Hurricane Katrina victims in September. It should be no less haunting tonight.
